Why you need to take the Part 107 test

The FAA’s Part 107 rules say that if you want to fly a drone for business, you need a drone pilot license. They used to call it a “remote pilot certificate with a small UAS rating.” To get it, you just have to pass the in-person written exam, often referred to as the Part 107 test. 

The test has 60 multiple-choice questions, and you’ve got to pick the right answer for each one. You can take the test at one of the 700 testing centers across the US. If you pass, they’ll give you a physical license, which you should keep on you when you’re using your drone. 

And because the test is far tricker than a common sense test (you’ll need to know how to read a sectional chart, and what stratiform clouds are, among other topics), you’ll likely want to take a training course.
