5 Best Remote Control Spy Drones for 2018 – Review of RC Spy Quadcopters

Using a remote controlled spy drone may be a conversation that is somewhat controversial, but as long as you’re staying within your the law’s legal limits, you’ll be just fine. Spy drones aren’t exactly used as tools to spy on people, but they can be used to survey your property, for example.

While using an RC spy drone might have you turning your head to look at something else, don’t do that yet. Just because it’s a spy drone doesn’t mean it has nothing else to offer! Besides, drones considered to be spy drones often have some of the best specs. That, or they have a lot to offer in other areas you may be interested in.

Either way, in this review we’ll be going over my favorite spy drone picks. Hopefully, you find one you like and make a purchase. They’re often great for aerial photography and videography, aerial surveillance, and a whole lot more.

Remote Controlled Spy Drones Reviews

As I said previously, I’ll be reviewing my top 5 picks for my all-time favorite spy drones.

What I love most about the AA108 by Altair Aerial is the fact that their customer service is sublime. This is the best quad for your money in terms of quality and overall value.

    AA 818 Hornet

The 818 Hornet, also from Altair Aerial, is a spectacular quadcopter. It can be yours for as little as $170, which is an awesomely low price for what you’re getting, as it was with the AA108. This manufacturer knows how to deliver.

GoPro’s are the best action cameras money can buy. If you’re in the market for a drone that can be a camera drone on and off, I highly recommend the Blackhawk by Altair Aerial. The mount for the GoPro is also removable, as well. Either way, the action camera it comes with is well worth the money.

The Bebop 2 by Parrot is last on my list because of its costly price tag, not because it’s garbage. Keep that in mind if you’re about to scroll away. In reality, the Bebop 2 is actually the most technical spy drone on my list.

    RC Toy Drones FAQ

If you don’t see an answer to your question listed below in my FAQ section, let me know and I’ll do my best to give you one!

Do I need to register my drone with the FAA?

Because I don’t want to give you the wrong answers to this question, or misinform you whatsoever, click here for all the information you’ll need on registering your drone, the FAA’s rules and regulations, etc.

Do I have to carry my drone license with me everywhere when I fly?

If you were required to register your drone and obtain a license then, yes, you absolutely have to carry it with you everywhere you go when your drone is in the air and you are at the controls.

Which type of drone is best to start with?

In my honest opinion, starting with a low cost, inexpensive toy drone is your best bet. Not only will you be more calm flying something that isn’t hundreds of dollars, but they tend to give all the flight training you’ll ever really need.

If you’re interested in going forward with more professional drones, toy drones are where you need to be. They give you the first bit of experience you’ll need. In truth, some of them can be a learning curve where learning to fly is concerned, but this is a good thing.

Toy drones don’t have a lot of features and technical specifications, which can sometimes make them a bit difficult to control. Therefore, if you can control a difficult toy drone, you can control anything.

    Best Toy Drones Analysis

Most people who are enthusiastic about buying their first drone make the mistake of aiming too high. Starting with toy drones is not something you should overlook, especially when it comes to the price tags, because they are definitely a great learning experience to check out.

While there are a ton of toy drones out there, I picked my top 5 favorites to put into this review because they’re all of high quality, have value where your money is concerned, and are my top drone toys picks for many more reasons, but I won’t go on about them all day.

    WLtoys S977

For anyone looking for one of the best remote control helicopters at a seriously dirt cheap price for whatever reason, the S977 by WLtoys is your best bet. Remote Control Helicopter with Live Camera FAQ

If you don’t see an answer to your question listed below in my FAQ section, let me know and I’ll do my best to give you one!

Are RC helicopters the same as drones?

Yes and no. RC helicopters are typically a lot less technical and don’t offer many features, if any at all. Drones, however, have better cameras, extensive features, and better technical specs.

Do I have to register my remote control helicopter?

I’m not completely sure on the rules where registering a remote control helicopter are concerned, so instead I’ll direct you to the FAA registration page to get the answers you need directly.

    RC Helicopters with Camera Analysis

Even though I’ve given you a bit of insight into the magical world of the best RC helicopters with cameras, I have to take you back to drones for a minute here.

If you’re interested in serious specs, awesome features, and an all around technical piece of flight wonder, drones are where you need to be. I also did this review to give you some insight into RC helicopters and how they are good for those who want throwaway flight fun.

They’re great for learning how to fly and to gain ground in the technical flight world with unmanned aerial vehicles, but, in my honest opinion, that’s all they’re really good for. Either way, you know what you want, so the choice is ultimately yours, but drones are much better to go with if you want a challenge and something impressive.

Best Drones Under 150 – Top 5 Affordable Quadcopters Under 150

A budget of only 150 USD may not seem like much to others, but to me it’s more than enough where finding the best drone under 150 USD is concerned. Even if you want something that’s larger than life, I promise you, I can give you a drone that makes the cut even though it costs much less than those that cost hundreds do.

It all begins by finding a budget price that you’re comfortable with and stick to it. After that, you’ll want to think about what you want your drone to do. For example, do you want Return to Home, Follow Me, or some other essential feature? If you thought it’s not possible for a drone this cheap to have, you’d be wrong. Under 150 USD is where it’s at.

Because I’m such a fan of cheap drones, I’ve decided to throw together a thorough review of the best drones under 150 USD to give you an idea of the best ones and what they have to offer.

FAQ About the Best Drone Under 150 USD

Which is the best FPV drone under 150 USD?

My favorite best FPV drone under 150 USD is no doubt the Altair Aerial AA108. It has an awesome FPV system that works like an absolute dream. You’d think it’d be priced at double what it is now just because of that specification alone!

The Best Drones Under 150 USD

Like I said before, I’ve taken my favorite drones under 150 USD and have ranked them in order from my top pick to my least favorite. Hopefully, this will help give you an idea of what’s out there and will persuade you to make a purchase!

    Altair Aerial AA108

The AA108 by Altair Aerial will only run you $120 right now, an awesome deal for everything this drone has to offer. It’s a serious favorite of mine that I have a hard time putting down to charge the batteries.

  • Has a total flight time of up to 10 minutes, doubled by the second battery included for free
  • Features Headless Mode, Altitude Hold, Custom Route Mode, 3 Flight Skill Levels, Out of Range Alarm, Emergency Landing, Low Battery Alarm, 1-Button Takeoff and 1-Button Landing

  • best drones under 150 altair aa108

If you need more detailed information about this Altair AA108, you can click here

What I love most about the AA108 by Altair Aerial is the fact that their customer service is sublime. A lot of drone manufacturers have a tendency to fluff their customers off, even though they’re the ones literally keeping these companies in business, so it’s nice to know Altair Aerial have their customer’s backs when there’s an issue with their drone.

What I’m not a fan of, unfortunately, is that it doesn’t come with a memory card. Although, the manufacturer recommends that you get a 4 GB microSDHC Class 10 UHS-1 memory card to suit the drone the best, which is nice, I suppose.

    DBPOWER UDI U842 Predator

The UDI U842 Predator by DBPOWER is an impeccable drone that will never let you down. You can get it right now for as little as $130, like the AA108, so this one is also an awesome deal for all that you’re getting. The thing I like the most about the UDI U842 Predator by DBPOWER is that it’s agile, inexpensive, and offers some great FPV footage for those willing to give it a serious try and invest their hard earned cash.

What I don’t like, however, is that too many users have reported that the manufacturer is either bland or unresponsive. Hopefully, if you have an issue with the drone the manufacturer will only be bland and not totally unresponsive.

    Force1 U45W Blue Jay

The U45W Blue Jay by Force1 can be yours for as little as $100. It’s a simple drone that comes with a couple of features I think you’ll like. It’s a more traditional drone that isn’t as extensive, so let’s get to the good parts.

  • Has a 720p HD camera with WiFi FPV real-time transmission in 1280×720 HD resolution and 2MP still photos
  • Features 1-Key Takeoff, 1-Key Landing, 360-Degree Flip, Low Battery Alarm, Altitude Hold, Custom Route Mode and Headless Mode
  • Has a maximum transmission range of up to 320 feet
  • Takes a 3.7V 500mAh LiPo battery
  • Uses a 2.4GHz transmission frequency with 4 channels
  • Has a total flight time of between 7 to 8 minutes, doubled by the second battery included for free
  • best drones under 150 u45w blue jay

If you need more detailed information about this Force1 U45W Blue Jay, you can click here

What I like most about the U45W Blue Jay by Force1 is that it comes with a 4 GB SanDisk Micro SD card, card reader, and a spare battery. You get all of this, plus the drone and what it can do, of course, for only $100.

What I don’t like, however, is that it takes between 90 to 120 minutes to charge a battery, which is a pretty long time when you compare it to the 7 to 8 minutes of flight you get.

    Syma X8G

The X8G by Syma is another one of my favorite best video drone under 150 USD coming in at only $130, like many of our other competitors! For this one, however, you’ll need a GoPro action camera to get in on the aerial photography.

  • Uses a 6-axis gyro stabilization system
  • Features 360-Degree Eversion, 3D Lock and One-Key 360-Degree Roll/Continuous Roll
  • Uses an 8MP HD camera that supports both 720p HD and 1080p HD MOV video quality
  • Comes with a holding case that is compatible with GoPro action cameras (not included)
  • Has a total flight time of between 7 to 10 minutes
  • Takes a 7.2V 2000mAh LiPo battery
  • Uses a 2.4GHz transmission frequency with 4 channels
  • Has a maximum transmission range of up to 100 meters
  • best drones under 150 syma x8g

If you need more detailed information about this Syma X8G, you can click here

What I love most about the X8G by Syma is that it’s a simple drone for those who love simplicity in their hobbies. This one is a great drone to relax and mess around with, especially when you look at the competitive pricing!

What I don’t like, unfortunately, is that you can’t really get any good shots unless you have a GoPro. Either way, if you want some basic photography in the air, the onboard camera will do just fine unless you want to dish out some extra cash for a GoPro.

    Altair Hornet U818

The Hornet U818 by Altair is one of the best drone under 150 USD that has an impressive amount of features and extras for only $110. You’re able to fly this one both indoors and outside, as well!

  • Has a 720p HD wide-angle camera with WiFi FPV real-time transmission, 1280x720p HD videos and 2MP still photos
  • Features Altitude Hold, Headless Mode, Emergency Stop, Low Power Alarm, Out of Range Alarm, Still Photography Modes, Single Shot, Custom Flight Route, 3D View Mode, One-Button Takeoff and One-Button Landing
  • Has a total flight time of 15 minutes
  • Takes a 7.4V 1000mAh LiPo battery
  • Has a maximum WiFi transmission distance of 60 meters when outdoors
  • altair 818 hornet best drones under 150

If you need more detailed information about this Altair Hornet U818, you can click here

What I love about the Hornet U818 by Altair is the fact that it comes with a 1-year warranty and technical support. It also comes with a 4 GB TF card for storing your photos and video footage and a card reader, as well!

I must say, though, I’m not a big fan of the maximum WiFi transmission distance. Altair is also unclear as to what the regular maximum transmission range is if you’re flying it inside or using it without WiFi FPV outside.

The Best Drone Under 150 USD

Low budgets don’t mean a low budget drone, so keep this in mind the next time you decide a cheap budget is the right budget!

Best Drone Under 500 USD – Top 5 Drones to Buy Under 500

Paying 500 USD is a lot to pay for a drone, or is it? In this day and age, you don’t have to shell out $1,000 USD or more to pay for the best drone. If you think 500 USD is a lot to pay, then I highly recommend going to one of my other budget reviews, but if it’s a perfect price range for you, let’s get to finding you the best drone under 500 USD.

There are a lot of different drone models to choose from, making the task seem more frustrating and confusing than fun. If you’re like me, choosing one drone from a large number of them is a difficult task, to say the least.

With this in mind, I’ve created a review to showcase nothing but the best of the best where the best drone under 500 USD is concerned. The list isn’t ranked from my top to least favorite, so feel free to browse and scroll around as you see fit.

FAQ About The Best Drone Under 500 USD

If you don’t see an answer to your question listed below in my FAQ section, let me know and I’ll do my best to give you one!

Do I need to register my drone with the FAA?

Because I don’t want to give you the wrong answers to this question, or misinform you whatsoever, click here for all the information you’ll need on registering your drone, the FAA’s rules and regulations, etc.

Do I have to carry my drone license with me everywhere when I fly?

If you were required to register your drone and obtain a license then, yes, you absolutely have to carry it with you everywhere you go when your drone is in the air and you are at the controls.

Which is the best drone under 500 USD?

In my honest opinion, I don’t have a top favorite for this category, but I am more particular about the Phantom 3 Standard by DJI because of everything you can do with it and what it has to offer otherwise.

    Best Drones Under 500

Narrowing your search down with a budget is always a good idea. It gives you a price range to stick to and helps you to stick to one general price category instead of blindly looking through everything all at once.

    DJI Phantom 3 Standard

The Phantom 3 Standard by the powerhouse manufacturer DJI will run you around $450, but let me tell you, it’s worth every penny you’ll spend on it. DJI is a known drone manufacturer that brings everything to the table all at once.

  • Has a camera with 2.7K video at 30 FPS and 12MP still photos with a real-time video feed in 720p HD
  • Has a live image stream transmission range of up to half of a mile away using the DJI GO app on your tablet or smartphone
  • Features Follow Me, Point of Interest, Automatic Flight Assistant and Waypoints
  • Uses a GPS navigational system
  • Has a total flight time of up to 25 minutes
  • Comes with an 8 GB microSD card
  • Uses a 3-axis gimbal stabilization system
  • What I like best about the Phantom Standard 3 by DJI would have to be that it literally looks, feels, and handles like a drone that would cost hundreds more, if not over $1000 or so.

Unfortunately, what I’m not a fan of is the fact that it’s a very sensitive drone because of the transmitter, smartphone or tablet, and the drone itself all connected through WiFi. There’s bound to be problems, so make sure you’re careful with what you’re doing.

    DJI Spark

Once again DJI takes a spot in my best drone for under 500 USD review, but this time it’s with the Spark. Keep in mind I’m reviewing only the drone, not the transmitter included with the drone, so make sure you remind yourself of this before you make your purchase. It’ll cost you approximately $375, which is, in my humble opinion, an insanely cheap price for everything you’re getting.

  • Uses a 1/2.3” CMOS sensor camera with 1080p videos, 12MP still photos and real-time WiFi transmissions in 720p
  • Has a maximum real-time video transmission range of up to 1.2 miles
  • Features FaceAware, Palm Control Mode, ActiveTrack, Sport Mode and TapFly
  • Able to quickly launch off the palm of your hand by recognizing your face using FaceAware
  • Uses a 2-axis mechanical gimbal with UltraSmooth technology to reduce any shacking and rolling shutter effects
  • Able to reach speeds of up to 31 mph when in Sport Mode
  • Has a total flight time of up to 16 minutes
  • Able to edit and share videos and photos to social media instantly using the DJI GO 4 app
  • Takes a 3S 11.4V 1480mAh LiPo battery
  • Uses both GPS and GLONASS navigational systems
  • Able to use FPV when in Sport Mode with DJI Goggles (not included)
  • I love the Spark by DJI because it takes the place of the best video drone under 500 USD in my heart. It’s got a ton of useful features that go together with taking videos, photos, you name it. Seriously, it has a feature for just about anything you’ll want to do with it!

What I’m not a fan of is the fact that users have reported that the life of a single battery is basically exaggerated by DJI. To be more exact, you’re looking at only around 8 to 12 minutes of battery life instead of the advertised 16 minutes.

    3DR Solo

I’d like to mention right away that the Solo by 3DR I’ll be reviewing below is the one without the gimbal installed, so you’ll have to purchase that separately if you want it. If you’re only purchasing the quadcopter itself, you’re looking at a price range of around $230, making it one of the more expensive options in my review.

  • Powered by identical 1 GHz computers
  • Features Smart Shots, Orbit, Follow Me, Cable Cam, Selfie and GPS Mode
  • Has a maximum transmission range of up to half of a mile
  • Compatible with GoPro models HERO3+ and HERO4 (if you have the gimbal)
  • Uses a pre-bound transmitter or a mobile app through your smartphone, tablet, etc.
  • Has a total flight time of between 15 to 20 minutes
  • It’s no secret that the Solo by 3DR is one of the best drones under 500 USD, even if you can’t shoot videos or take pictures with it unless you have a GoPro mounted and the gimbal.

However, what I don’t like is the fact that a scarily high number of users have reported that dealing with the manufacturer is an absolute nightmare. Apparently, their customer service is seriously lacking in all departments, so hopefully, you don’t have an issue that requires their help if you make the purchase.

    Parrot Bebop 2

The Bebop 2 by Parrot is cutting it pretty close to our 500 USD budget, coming in with a price of around $448. Even though it’s a tight squeeze budget-wise, it’ll always be one of the best drone for under 500 I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing.

  • Has a maximum transmission range of up to 1.2 miles when using the Parrot Skycontroller 2
  • Uses a camera with full 1080p HD videos and 14MP still photos in RAW, DNG and JPEG formats
  • Able to go into FPV when using the Parrot Cockpitglasses
  • Has a total flight time of 25 minutes
  • Takes a 2700mAh LiPo battery
  • Able to hit speeds up to 35 mph
  • Uses a 3-axis digital stabilization system for stable, smooth videos
  • Features One-Key Takeoff, One-Key Landing and Return to Home
  • Able to download the FreeFlightPro app to access additional features and options, such as Flight Plan for autonomous flight plans
  • What I love most about the Bebop 2 by Parrot is that it has a lot of cool things to do with it. Even though you have to pay a minimal fee to unlock some of the features in the FreeFlightPro app, it’s most definitely worth it and I highly recommend it!

Unfortunately, the WiFi connection can be a bit spotty, as a lot of users have previously reported. Because of this, it’s recommended that you never fly it under anything, such as a tree, for example.

    Yuneec Breeze

The Breeze by Yuneec has a current price that shocked me when I first saw it. It’s only going for $230 right now! That’s a price that will have you turn your head so fast your neck may snap. Seriously, this drone is amazing and I recommend it to anyone who’s even remotely interested in buying a drone.

  • Uses a camera with 4K UHD videos and 13MP still photos with a real-time 720p live feed on a smartphone or tablet
  • Features Selfie, Pilot, Orbit, Journey, Follow Me, One-Key Landing and Auto Return to Home
  • Has built-in Indoor Positioning Sensors (IPS) that allow holding a steady position
  • Uses propeller protectors to prevent contact with objects, people, etc.
  • Has foldable propellers for easy transportation
  • Able to download the Breeze Cam app on a smartphone or tablet to navigate and control the drone, edit videos, photos and share footage on social media
  • Comes with a 1-year warranty
  • Has a total flight time of between 10 to 12 minutes, doubled by the second included battery
  • Takes a 3S 11.1V 1150mAh LiPo battery
  • Has a maximum transmission range of up to 100 meters
